What You Need To Know About Ceramic

What do ceramic coatings do and why are they better than wax?

Before we jump right into the nitty gritty of coatings, let’s talk about paint. Automotive lacquer paint, while it feels hard to the touch, is actually quite soft (usually rated between 1-4 on the Mohs Scale). This means that even a medium grade pencil can easily scratch the surface. Paint in general is also quite porous, kind of like our skin, which allows for dirt, oils, grime and other environmental contaminants to easily grab on and stick.

Traditionally, waxes and polymer sealants are used on the surface to “soak in” to those pores and provide UV protection and add some shine. That’s all fine and dandy, but it’s short term at best. Most waxes will be removed from a vehicle’s surface after only a couple of washes or a bad storm, since there’s nothing in the wax that makes it cling tightly to the paint.

How ceramic works on your vehicle

…Our provided line of ceramic coatings leverage silica technology that chemically bonds with factory clear coat to provide a layer of protection that is more permanent and resilient than a wax or other polymers. We’re sure you’ve seen those videos online of craftsmen making tables out of wood and epoxy resin. The wood is rough, cracked and imperfect. But, when the resin is poured over it until every nook and cranny is filled, it creates a perfectly smooth finish just barely above the top that is far shinier, smoother and more durable than the bare wood by itself… This is very similar to how a ceramic coating works!

Once your vehicle’s surfaces have been properly prepped, the liquid ceramic coating gets spread evenly across the paint, trim, glass etc… The coating immediately begins to soak in and cross-link with the paint, leaving a smoother, glasslike finish and creates an impenetrable layer to UV, weather, acids, pollutants, bird droppings, tree sap and anything else that threatens your vehicle’s surface.

How do you know if a coating is right for you and how much does it cost?

There are many variables that play into how much a ceramic coating costs. From the current condition of the paint and how it’s cared for, to how long you’re going to keep the vehicle and what you use it for. Even choosing which surfaces you want to be protected (i.e. paint, glass, plastics/trim, wheels, even carpet and upholstery). Some customers have paid $300 for a ceramic coating package, others 3 to 4 times that amount. It all depends on YOU and what you want for your vehicle.
